The Beijing Declaration

A call to revolutionize

gender equality

In 1995, 17,000 delegates from every corner of the world attended the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, where leaders from 189 countries united to adopt the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

This was not just another policy document—it was a bold manifesto rooted in the lived experiences, ideas, and demands of women worldwide. Today, nearly 30 years on, it remains the most visionary, widely endorsed agenda for women’s rights ever crafted. But it is not just a government mandate—it belongs to all of us.

Yet, the truth is that not a single country has fully achieved gender equality. Worse, every new crisis—from climate disasters to conflicts or pandemics—deepens existing inequalities, stalling global progress. But despite these obstacles, change is here. It is driven by a groundswell of people, especially the young, who understand that gender equality is not just an aspiration but a necessity. They are not waiting—they are demanding their rights and reshaping our world.

The time for transformative action is now. UN Women calls on all of us to accelerate progress in three revolutionary ways:

Drive impactful change at the ground level

Amplify the power of the people

Make multilateral systems work for equality

In 1995, the world came together and agreed: Equality is non-negotiable, and the Beijing Declaration is how we achieve it. As we approach 2025, we stand at another crossroads. We know what needs to be done, and the roadmap is clear. The opportunity is ours—to finally fulfill the overdue promises of the Beijing Declaration.

Now is the moment to deliver on this vision. It is within our power to create a world where every voice is heard, every right is respected, and every person is granted the equal opportunity to thrive. The revolution for equality is here—let’s make it unstoppable.
