Mexico City | Safe, empowering and sustainable for all

Mexico City is taking measures to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls in public spaces. According to a recent Scoping Study conducted for the Mexico City Safe City Programme, the majority of women who participated in focus group discussions said they had experienced some form of sexual violence in their daily commute in the city (Colegio de México 2017). Since 2015, Mexico City has been participating in UN Women’s Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Initiative, the first-ever global programme that develops, implements, and evaluates tools, policies and comprehensive approaches on the prevention of and response to sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls. It began in November 2010 with founding programmes in the cities of Quito, Cairo, New Delhi, Port Moresby and Kigali, and now spans more than 25 cities around the world. The video illustrates the main areas of action currently undertaken by one of the partners in the Safe City and Safe Public Spaces Programme, the Municipality of Distrito Capital, in collaboration with UN Women, and grassroots women and women’s organizations, public transportation, and the media. This work would not be possible without the strong support of the people of Spain through its Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). In February 2017, the next biennial UN Women Global Forum ‘Safe, Empowering and Sustainable City Approaches in Action for Women and Girls’ and the ‘Global Meeting of Mayors on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment’ will take place in Mexico City, in collaboration with the local government of Mexico City, and the Government of Mexico.
